The Built-In Kitchen: A Panel-Ready Appliance Spec Sheet

A working buying guide for a built-in, panel-ready, gas-cooking kitchen. Eight appliance categories, each broken into Save, Mid-Range, and Splurge tiers — so you can mix and match by category rather than committing to one price point across the board.

Budget approachMixed — splurge on key pieces, save on the rest

Kitchen appliance spec sheet and comparison across eight categories

A note on “panel-ready”: true panel-ready construction (a custom cabinetry panel attached to the appliance front) is really only available on refrigeration, dishwashers, wine storage, and the trash compactor. Ranges, wall ovens, and most microwaves keep their own factory face regardless of price point — those are called out per category below.

The eight categories

01

Range — Gas

Requirement36" gas range, 5+ burners, true convection, cast-iron grates.

Not panel-ready — the range front is always visible, so finish and brand character matter most here.

Save $3,000–$4,500

Bertazzoni MAS305GASXV (30")

Italian build, true European convection, thermocouple gas safety, continuous cast-iron grates. Strong value entry point into a premium brand.

Panel-ready No

Mid-Range $4,500–$7,000

ZLINE Legacy Dual Fuel (RA36) or GE Café

6-burner gas cooktop, pro-style look, one-piece porcelain cooktop, ball-bearing glide racks — luxury aesthetic well below flagship pricing.

Panel-ready No

Splurge $8,000–$14,000+

Wolf Professional or Thermador Pro Harmony

Dual-stacked burners for even heat, best-in-class simmer control, automatic re-ignition safety. The benchmark for serious home cooking.

Panel-ready No

02

Double Wall Oven

RequirementTwo full ovens, true convection in both cavities, self-clean.

Also not panel-ready — mounts with its own stainless or glass face, though some brands offer trim/color options to coordinate with cabinetry.

Mid-Range $3,500–$5,500

KitchenAid or Café Double Wall Oven

True convection, good usable capacity, reliable and widely serviced. Solid everyday performer.

Panel-ready No

Splurge $6,500–$11,000+

Thermador or Wolf Double Wall Oven

Noticeably more even heat distribution across racks — worth the premium if you bake or entertain often.

Panel-ready No

03

Microwave

RequirementEveryday reheating/defrost; clean sightline if possible.

Save $400–$900

GE or KitchenAid built-in / over-the-range microwave

Standard trim-kit or OTR install. Reliable, inexpensive, does the job.

Panel-ready No

Splurge $1,200–$2,500

Sharp, JennAir, or Thermador Drawer Microwave

Mounts below the counter, out of sightline. Can be ordered panel-ready — fits your built-in aesthetic better than any wall unit.

Panel-ready Yes

04

Dishwasher — Panel-Ready

RequirementPanel-ready front, quiet operation, strong dry performance.

This is where panel-ready really pays off visually.

Mid-Range $1,100–$1,600

Bosch 800 Series (panel-ready)

Excellent drying, very quiet (low 40s dBA range), widely available service and parts.

Panel-ready Yes

Splurge $1,800–$2,800

Thermador Star Sapphire or Miele (panel-ready)

Top-tier quiet operation, push-to-open handle-less options, customizable spray-zone control.

Panel-ready Yes

05

Refrigerator — Panel-Ready, Built-In

RequirementFull-size built-in column or French door, panel-ready, flush install.

Built-in refrigerators sit flush with cabinetry (vs. protruding 4–10" like freestanding models) and accept a custom cabinetry panel. Typical range: $5,000–$10,000+.

Mid-Range $2,700–$8,000

Thermador Freedom Column / French Door

Roughly $2,700–$8,000 depending on configuration — meaningfully less than Sub-Zero for comparable performance. Dual compressors, Home Connect Wi-Fi.

Panel-ready Yes

Splurge $8,000–$13,000+

Sub-Zero Classic or Column

Category benchmark for humidity/temperature control and longevity; on average runs about $4,000 more than a comparable Thermador.

Panel-ready Yes

Alternative $6,500–$10,000

Miele Refrigeration Column

Newer entrant (refrigeration sourced from BSH, same family as Bosch/Thermador); well-regarded build quality and lighting.

Panel-ready Yes

06

Two Under-Counter Refrigerators

RequirementFlanking an island or prep/beverage station; panel-ready to match main fridge.

Mid-Range $2,000–$3,200 ea.

Thermador Freedom Under-Counter Drawers (~5.2 cu ft)

Panel-ready, coordinates directly with a Thermador main refrigerator. Available in single or drawer configurations.

Panel-ready Yes

Alternative $2,200–$3,500 ea.

Sub-Zero or Miele Under-Counter Refrigeration

Choose to match whichever brand you select for the main built-in fridge for consistent panel gaps and hardware.

Panel-ready Yes

07

Wine Fridge — Bottles + Boxed Wine

RequirementDual-zone, at least one flat/adjustable shelf zone for boxed wine, panel-ready.

The trickiest spec: boxed wine (bag-in-box, roughly 13" tall and fairly deep/wide) needs open, flat shelf space — not the fixed wood-slat bottle racking most wine fridges use.

Mid-Range $1,800–$3,200

Zephyr Presrv or Perlick Dual-Zone

Dual independent temperature zones; adjustable/flat shelving can be reconfigured away from fixed bottle racks to fit boxed wine.

Panel-ready Some models

Splurge $4,000–$7,000

Thermador or Sub-Zero Wine Column (panel-ready)

True built-in integration matching the rest of the kitchen. Size up from your first instinct — boxes eat vertical space fast compared to bottles.

Panel-ready Yes

08

Trash Compactor

Requirement15" built-in, panel-ready, odor management.

Mid-Range $1,000–$1,400

KitchenAid 15" Built-In Trash Compactor

Panel-ready design, compacts trash volume up to 80%, built-in odor management, whisper-quiet operation. The standard pick.

Panel-ready Yes

Save $700–$900

Haier 15" Panel-Ready Compactor

Same footprint and panel-ready mounting at a lower price point.

Panel-ready Yes

Panel-ready pays off visually on refrigeration, dishwashers, wine storage, and the compactor — the categories that accept a custom cabinetry panel. Ranges and wall ovens keep their factory face, so brand character and finish matter most there.
